Astin puts a subdued mania into the role that takes exactly the amount needed from pools of emotionally broken family man, frustrated test subject, and potentially dangerous psychopath. I probably would have leaned over for a look myself, since odds favor that a quick check of current weather conditions would reveal a more meaningful mystery than this movie has. Sensing Gina is pregnant, Janet sacrifices herself to the infected so that Morgan and Gina can escape to the surface together. Gwyneth Paltrow’s character Beth Imhoff is patient zero. This would-be marquee draw never gains ground because the movie contentedly gives up on initial attempts at originality to go forward with half-baked efforts on virtually every front. When it finally does swing into macabre matters, the switch feels like a sudden shock even though the movie quietly conditions us for horror all along. Joe knocks them all into submission within seconds, and takes the title of Captain of Echo Team, with the men he just pummeled as his crew. Joe and Top Sims chase him down, but he has infected himself with generation 12 of the strain. At the crab plant, Echo team is on a look-and-see mission only, with Alpha and Bravo on back-up. Gus Dietrich and the cavalry save them in their last surviving moments. Over Knox’s objections, Pierce agrees with Gina’s proposal to sweep Minnesota for patient zero. Had contact with several people even before she started showing symptoms. The final fight takes place in a room where a six-foot-long metal spike happens to be conveniently positioned at a perfect height for impaling a person’s chest. As most of the world’s population continues transforming into violent hordes of rabid infected, the last remaining medical and military personnel bunker in a cavernous underground shelter.
